‘Twilight’ fans moon over ‘Eclipse’: ‘It was way better than “New Moon” ‘

The fans have spoken. Hero Complex contributor Yvonne Villarreal covered the big premiere for “Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” and the reviews from the fans are in. Here’s a snapshot of the fanfare and a taste of what true believers have to say about the film, which opens June 30.

After turning the space outside the Nokia Theatre into a tent city earlier this week, hundreds of screaming “Twilight” fans — many toting posters with messages such as “I want to play ‘Pat the Pattinson’ ” or “My heart goes nutz for Lutz” scrawled in brilliant colors — got their wish at the world premiere Thursday of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”: photos with Robert Pattinson, a glimpse at Kellan Lutz’s Calvin Klein underwear and, for a few, last-minute tickets to see the film.

“It’s still such a struggle in the car on the way here,” Pattinson said on the red carpet. “I’m like, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.’ ”

It was a sentiment the nearby shrieking girls at the premiere definitely shared, which was part of the Los Angeles Film Festival, even though other festival-goers might not have.

Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga: Whose Side Are You On?

A feud has apparently broken out between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga over the latter’s new video for “Alejandro.” Perry recently tweeted: “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.”It’s an apparent reference to the video’s heavy use of religious imagery — Gaga is dressed in a rubber nun’s habit, has a crucifix painted on her pelvic region and at one point suggestively swallows rosary beads — though nowhere does Perry mention Gaga’s name or the song title directly. Requests for comment from Lady Gaga and Perry were not immediately returned.

It’s a valid point: Madonna was using religious imagery to gin up controversy two decades ago in her video for “Like a Prayer.” Though, in linking her criticism to the lamest of comedians’ tricks, Perry appears to be living in a glass house, as MTV points out.

The Next ‘Twilight’: The Search Continues At BookExpo America

We pick five books that could live up to the hype to be your next book addiction.

Mega-successful books series like “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” don’t come around every day. The flowery tales of Edward and Bella and the fantastical adventures of Harry and his schoolmates have entrenched themselves in the hearts of loyal followers, leaving room for little else. But the June 5 release of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” spin-off novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” marks the end of an era. That’s why the publishers, authors and booksellers at BookExpo America this week were eager to tout their upcoming releases as the next big thing.

MTV News scoured the trade show and soaked in the hype. Check back at our Hollywood Crush blog for reviews of many of these titles when they’re available. But in the meantime, here are five buzzed-about books whose mythical creatures and evil dystopias seem the most promising. Many of them are already being prepped for the big screen too.

“I Am Number Four”

What It’s About: A group of young aliens land on Earth after their own planet is destroyed, secretly integrating themselves into society where they slowly learn they’re developing powers. When those responsible for blowing up their planet track them down and begin killing them in sequential order, our hero John Smith (otherwise known as Number Four) vows to dish vengeance on the bad guys, all while juggling a hot and heavy love triangle involving his fellow extraterrestrial Sarah (Number Six) and a human girl.

What Could Make It the Next “Twilight”: The book by “Pittacus Lore” (the pseudonym of James Frey and Jobie Hughes) doesn’t hit shelves until August 17, but that didn’t stop Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay and the creators of “Smallville” from teaming up to produce a big-budget film that’s set for a 2011 release. Alex Pettyfer of “Beastly” and Dianna Agron from “Glee” are among the stars already attached. That alone could help the book shoot to the top of the pile, but at its heart the title is about one young man and his quest to discover himself, get the girl and take down the enemy.

“The Passage”

What It’s About: A government weapons project goes awry, turning much of the population into blood-sucking vampires. The book follows the story of Amy, a young survivor who remains mostly unaffected by the virus and may be the key to saving the human race. Interestingly, the tale shifts between two time periods, jumping 100 years into the future, when Amy is still alive (cue spooky music).

What Could Make It the Next “Twilight”: Author Justin Cronin developed his book, which come out on June 8, while listening to his 13-year-old daughter obsess over Stephenie Meyer. Like the “Twilight” series, the story revolves around a special girl. Director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator,” “Blade Runner”) apparently agrees and has optioned the book to develop into a feature film.

“The Hunger Games”

What It’s About: In a oppressive country called Panem, every year, two children from each of 12 districts are sent to compete in a televised arena battle to the death. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen has the advantage of archery skills and something-more-than-friendship with fellow District 12 tribute Peeta.

What Could Make It the Next “Twilight”: Suzanne Collins’ trilogy (third book, “Mockingjay,” is out August 24) has created a fierce, selfless heroine, a tragic love triangle and a frightening dystopian future that’s captured adults and teens alike. There aren’t any vampires in sight, but fans’ enthusiasm for these books is growing mighty feverish. Lionsgate is slated to begin filming a movie adaptation in early 2011.

Justin Bieber Fever hits New York City: Tween sensation drives girls nuts at Rockefeller Center show

YouTube singing sensation Justin Bieber performed in front of 12,000 screaming tweens at a ‘Today’ show concert.

Gaggles of lovesick girls overcome by Bieber Fever swarmed midtown Friday.

More than 12,000 tweens shrieked, screamed and swooned throughout heartthrob Justin Bieber’s “Today” show concert outside of Rockefeller Center.

“This is one of the biggest concerts we’ve had in our 15-year history,” said NBC producer Melissa Lonner, who handles the summer shows. “This is definitely one of our youngest crowds.”

Fans clogged the streets surrounding the set, waving signs that read “Justin I Love U!” and “We Skipped PROM to see U!”

Rockefeller Center roared with “Justin! Justin!” as the YouTube sensation took the stage at 8:30 a.m. He ran through fan favorites, including “One Time,” “Baby” and “Somebody To Love” in his 30-minute set, complete with four acrobatic backup dancers.

The adoring crowd sang along with every word.

“You guys are the best fans in the world!” said the Canadian dreamboat, dressed in white pants and a red hoodie under a denim jacket.

Callan McAuliffe Joins I Am Number Four

Australian actor Callan McAuliffe is the latest cast addition to the DreamWorks’ Steven Spielberg-Michael Bay co-production, I Am Number Four. Based on the as-yet-unpublished book of the same name, which is the first in a planned series of young-adult sci-fi books by James Frey and Jobie Hughes, the movie is expected to begin filming this week, with D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) at the helm.

The movie adaptation was written by Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and tells the story of a small group of survivors from the planet Lorien, who take refuge on earth after a devastating war nearly eradicates their species. Still hunted, the Loriens’ only protection is a charm that prevents their pursuers from killing them unless done in a numerically sequential manner.

With three of the survivors dead, Number Four (Alex Pettyfer) takes on the guise of a human high school student and tries to hide out in Paradise, Ohio, under the protection of his guardian (Timothy Olyphant). McAuliffe will portray, Sam, Number Four’s best friend.

“I Am Number Four” is an intriguing project for a number of reasons. It’s an adaptation of a a young adult novel co-written by James Frey, controversial author of “A Million Little Pieces.” Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are producing it. On top of all that, the still-growing cast includes Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer and Kevin Durand. Now MTV has learned that one more has joined the cast: “Percy Jackson” star Jake Abel.

The story follows nine aliens who survive the destruction of their homeworld at the hands of a rival race. The group flees to Earth, where they proceed to blend in among the human populace. Trouble starts when the enemy pursues the fugitive aliens to their hiding place. Pettyfer stars as the titular Number Four, who poses as a high school student. Abel confirmed to MTV that he’ll play one of Pettyfer’s social rivals.
